Ernest is an independent cafe bar situated in the top end of the Ouseburn; we do our very best to serve up honest food, drink, music and art. We are open everyday 10am until late for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinking and dancing.

Forthcoming Events


Every Friday we hire out our back room for private parties, with drinking, dining and occasionally dancing down the front. On Saturdays we programme a series of events which are always free and open to all for drinking and dancing (eating earlier on). Weekday nights are evolving, with Tango on a Tuesday, a variety of private events and offers on other nights, and a brand new film night.

Thu 21st: Autumnal SOUP

A bi-monthly communal meal costing £4, during the meal 4 speakers will present their charitable cause, talking for only 4 minutes and taking 4 questions for the audience, at the end the audience will vote and the entrance money will be donated to the most worthy cause. The music will always be funky, but spanning many genre's everything from funk/soul/hip hop/afro/latin and beyond. 8pm - late, FREE

Ernest will provide a small box of low tech , non plastic  toys – entry is FREE though parents invited to bring along other books and toys (charity finds welcome) by way of a contribution, 2pm - 5pm 

FILM CLUB: Blade Runner

A blade runner must pursue and try to terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator. Starts 8pm, FREE.

Chilled Sunday night jazz… donations in the hat, pay as you feel.

Mon 9th: Northern Rising

Northern Rising: A North-East Poetry Social is a poetry night for new and established poets and poetry enthusiasts. It is curated and hosted by Al Niven, lecturer of English Literature at Newcastle University. 7pm - 10pm, £4.

Thu 12th: Freshly Squeezed: Open Mic Night at Ernest

Join us from 8pm every 2nd Thursday of the month for an evening of music and spoken word. With free entry for all + a free drink token for every performer, come and take your place in the spotlight and share your tunes and chatter. Sign up for a slot from 8pm and get comfortable, performances will begin shortly after. Welcoming everyone from seasoned performers to first timers; bringing fresh material or old classics! 8pm - 11pm, FREE.

Sat 14th: Candy Vortex

Be prepared for: Non-stop dancing, insane handmade décor, mind bending visuals, a bloody good time! 10pm until late, FREE

Mon 16th Oct - Thu 16th Nov: Emma Garrod - Drawn in Ink

An exhibition by local artist Emma Garrod. A recent illustration graduate with a love of sketching in pen and watercolour on location. Works ranging from local architecture to famous portraits. 7pm - late, FREE.

Mon 16th: Glowrogues

Glowrogues are Manchester-based collective led by Jim Molyneux. Hip hop, funk and jazz is weaved into a tapestry that oozes heady ambient pop and tight horn-filled choruses. Players in the collective bring vast experience from the jazz and folk scenes having appeared with The Old Dance School, Apes Grapes, SKELTR, ELDA and the Mancunian jazz juggernauts Beats and Pieces Big Band. 8pm - 11pm, £5.

A true-life drama, centering on British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett, who disappeared while searching for a mysterious city in the Amazon in the 1920s. Starts 8pm, FREE.

Thu 19th: Kolokol

Disco , techno, oddities, with  resident DJ’s Jon Cornbill and Jamie Cook. Starts 6pm, FREE.

Sat 21st: Oxjam

Oxjam Music Festival is a festival in aid of Oxfam. Oxjam is ran by dedicated volunteers and is held every October all over the UK. Working closely with the local music scene Oxjam's main aim is to raise money and awareness for Oxfam as well as celebrating local artists, 3pm - 2am

Mon 23rd: Drink and Draw

This popular creative social event is back and the theme is 'Summer Dreams'. Artist Bernadette Koranteng leads this relaxed drawing session where you work at your own pace without pressure whilst enjoying a chat and drink with friends. There is a stock of printed images to work from or just take inspiration from and do your own thing, 'Drawing Games' to enhance your skills in a fun way and a group Mural to participate in if you choose to.  Come with friends or on your own and make new friends. All materials supplied £3.50 on the door.

Wed 25th: La Mouche & Friends - Songs of a Still Disquiet

Newcastle-based singer songwriter La Mouche plays a bunch of her songs accompanied by friends in the cosy, intimate space of the Ernest backroom. A personal, mini concert filled with whispers and echoes, ephemeral implosions of little known impact reminding us that life is fragile and time is all consuming. Pay as you feel, 7pm - 9pm.

Fri 27th: Halloween Party

Tunes, facepainting, fancy dress prizes, get your gear on, get out and come and dance. 8pm - 2am, FREE.
